Why Monetary exists

Public sector finance has been the last industry left out.

Every other corner of the economy has software built for the way it works. Corporate treasury, construction, and restaurants all rely on purpose-built platforms. Government and nonprofit finance still relies on spreadsheets and legacy systems.

The teams responsible for managing public money are forced to stitch together debt, cash, leases, and investments across disconnected tools and manual processes. The result is delayed reporting, compliance risk, and decisions made without real-time visibility.

This is the work that funds public services. It deserves software built for it.

Three teams. Three different problems. The same shift.

The clearest way to explain what Monetary does is to show what changes after our customers go live.

Monetary Enables UNC Greensboro to Spot Bank Errors & Optimize Debt Reporting

With Monetary, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) not only streamlined debt management but also uncovered a significant bank overcharge, enhancing both reporting accuracy and financial oversight.

“We’ve come to rely on Monetary so much. We can’t imagine going back to the old ways.”

Three to four days down to thirty minutes.

Milwaukee’s Capital Finance team used to spend three to four days assembling its annual debt report. After Monetary, the same report takes thirty minutes. A single ad-hoc debt request that used to mean two to three hours of back-and-forth now takes the budget team five minutes — they pull it themselves.

“I feel confident that I could send a new senior financial analyst into Monetary and say, ‘Create five different scenarios with these assumptions,’ and they’d be able to get me something within an afternoon.”

Two hundred leases. Two clicks.

A request for debt data could take two to three hours — back-and-forth emails, data compilation, and spreadsheet updates — before anyone could even start using it.

“One click of the button and I have my audit notes. Another click and I have my journal entries. It’s sort of magical.”

What we believe

Four ideas at the core of Monetary.

We've built Monetary around a small number of strong convictions about the work public sector finance teams do — and what they deserve.

The mission you fund is the work the rest of us depend on.

The ambulance that arrives on time. Clean water. Safe streets. Great schools. Healthcare for those who need it most.
These services depend on finance teams managing public money well. When public finance has the right tools, communities thrive. We believe the people behind public finance deserve the best software we know how to build.

Active treasury management creates real, measurable value.

Top-performing treasury teams borrow at lower rates, reducing borrowing costs and freeing more money for public services, capital projects, and reserves. Over time, disciplined forecasting, investment management, and debt analysis create a lasting fiscal advantage. Treasury isn’t just an administrative function — it’s one of an organization’s most powerful financial levers.

Public finance teams have never had the tools they deserve.

Nearly half of public sector treasury teams still manage cash in spreadsheets, despite growing complexity and limited resources. Monetary is built on a simple belief: the people responsible for public finance deserve software designed specifically for the way they work — not tools adapted from corporate finance.

AI eliminates the staffing shortfall. It doesn't replace the staff.

Nearly half of public sector treasury teams expect to lose experienced staff to retirement within three years. Monetary’s AI analyst, Marty, helps preserve that institutional knowledge by delivering consistent, traceable answers grounded in your data. It accelerates analysis while keeping every financial decision under explicit human review — because AI should strengthen human judgment, not replace it.

Becoming Monetary

We outgrew the name.

We started in 2019 as DebtBook because debt management was the first problem we solved. As our customers trusted us with more—cash management, investments, lease accounting, bank reconciliation, and now AI—the platform outgrew its name.

Treasury sits at the center of public finance. Monetary reflects the platform we’ve become: one place to manage the full treasury function.

For existing DebtBook customers, nothing changes except the name. Your login, data, contract, support team, and platform remain exactly the same.

Leadership

A team built around the people we serve.

Monetary is led by a team with roots in public sector finance, capital markets, and enterprise software — and backed by investors who have built category-defining vertical SaaS companies in regulated industries.
